MOVE x Duane Gorey

New Media Collaboration | Performance, Installation 2015–2016
The MOVE project now exists as a new media collaboration with fellow Boston based artists Jak Ritger and K8 Howl.

Jak, K8, and myself work together to create an experience that celebrates the language of movement and gesture. As animators and projection artists, Jak & K8 have a deep understanding of the value of this language. They bring an unparalleled set of skills and a fresh point of view to the project.

On October 1 & 2 of 2016, we gave two performances in partnership with Boston musician Duane Gorey.

Part gallery-style experience, part performance, and part rock show, MOVE x Duane Gorey aimed to give our audience the chance to MOVE.

For the first hour each night, the audience was allowed free interaction with the installation.

Each night, this hour was full of laughter and movement.

Our audience found new, unexpected ways to interact with the installation. They used the props we provided with glee.

They even worked together to create more dramatic visuals.

Then the structured show began. As part of the performance, Duane composed an original song, and I choreographed a piece alongside him during the creative prcess. This number kicked off the set.

During the performance, Jak & K8 manned the projections, which responded not only to the live video and audio feed of the performance, but were also controlled manually on a midi keyboard.

After my dance, the curtain was drawn aside and the rest of Duane’s set was performed directly to the audience. K8 created several original animations to project strategically  during the rest of the show, merging some of our original concepts with his message as a musician.

One of the biggest goals of these two performances was to have the chance to record and analayze behavior to inform the next iteration of the project. It was an honor to work with Duane in bringing this experience to life in a new way.

Kat, K8, and Jak are busy analyzing behavior from the last performance to inform the next iteration of MOVE!
